What a professional invoice needs
Requirements vary by country, but the common core is the same: a unique invoice number, the date, both parties' names and addresses, a clear description of what was supplied, the amount due with any tax shown separately, and how and when to pay. Missing the number or the tax breakdown is the usual reason an invoice comes back.
If you are registered for sales tax or VAT, include your registration number and apply the right rate for your situation. If you are not, it is worth saying so briefly, so a client's accounts department does not query it.
Getting paid faster
Short payment terms and clear dates make a measurable difference. Put the due date in bold, state the terms in plain language, such as payment within 14 days, and include the exact payment details so nobody has to ask.
