How to sign a PDF

What kind of signature this is
This creates an electronic signature: an image of your signature placed into the page content of the document. That is what most everyday agreements use and what the other side expects when they ask you to sign and return a PDF.
It is not a certificate-based digital signature, which cryptographically binds an identity to the file and shows a validity banner in PDF readers. Some regulated processes, and qualified electronic signatures in the EU, require that kind of certificate from a trust service provider. If a counterparty specifically asks for a digital certificate or a timestamped signature, use a service that issues one.

Making the signature look right
A drawn signature looks best on a touch screen or with a stylus. With a mouse, draw larger than feels natural: the signature is scaled down when placed, which hides the wobble. A typed signature in a script font is consistent and legible, which some recipients prefer.
Size the placement to match the space on the line rather than the whole field, and leave it clear of the printed line so the document stays readable. The signature keeps its proportions when you resize, so it never stretches.
Tips for signing
- Fill in any text fields before signing, since a placed signature becomes part of the page.
- Add the date with the watermark tool if the form has a date field you cannot type into.
- Sign the last version of a document; re-signing after edits means starting over.
- Keep an unsigned copy if you may need to send the blank form again.
